Washable Cloth Nappies
As part of our environmentally friendly policies we encourage you to use washable nappies and we will wash them for you! If you would prefer to still use disposables at home we will be happy to change your child into a disposable at the end of each day.
Daisies Cloth Nappies Process
As part of our sustainable vision for Daisies, we provide a cloth nappy service. It is optional for parents/caregivers to join up when they enrol at Daisies. There is no extra cost as the cost of the nappies are included in Daisies fees. Parents can choose to send their children to Daisies in cloth or disposable nappies and have the same choice at the end of day so children can be changed into a disposable nappy before they go home or go home in a cloth nappy.
Bathroom set-up:
Each child has their own set of 5 nappies, this includes 5 outer shells of the same colour/pattern and 10 inners that go inside the shells. Each piece of the nappy is labeled with the child’s initials. These are stored in labeled containers on the bathroom shelves so we can easily access them.
There is a sink in the nappy change area which is used to rinse the cloth nappies after being soiled. Under the sink, in a cupboard is a large bucket where the nappies go after they have been rinsed under water.
Process:
At each nappy change, the new nappy is lined with a bamboo liner before being put on the child. The soiled liner is removed from the used nappy and is placed in a nappy bin or in the toilet (if they are flushable liners). The nappy is then rinsed in the sink with water and placed in the bucket. Once the bucket is full, the nappies are washed in a hot wash (75˚C) with laundry detergent and Sard 'Antibacterial Laundry Sanitiser'. We usually do two washes a day. The nappies are hung in the sun to dry and then reset to be put back in their container.
Why Cloth Nappies?
Did you know that:
It takes 4.5 trees to make disposable nappies for one baby (over 2 ½ years that works out to be 1.3 million trees for NZ babies).
It takes one cup of crude oil to make the plastic for each disposable nappy.
It takes as much energy to produce one disposable nappy as it does to wash a cloth nappy 200 times.
Disposable nappies generate 60 times more landfill than washable nappies - one baby in disposables will produce 2 T of landfill waste.
Disposable nappies are estimated to make up about 2% of landfill waste.
Over 2.5 years a child will use about 6,000 disposable nappies.
What will Daisies do?
If you wish to participate in the scheme we will purchase 5 new washable nappies for the sole use of your child. These will be yours to keep.
If you would prefer we used a different brand we are very happy to use nappies supplied by you (at your cost).
What do we ask of you?
We will ask you to sign an agreement to refund us the cost of the nappies should you stop using the nappies for any reason or leave Daisies within 4 months of the agreement date.
You can also purchase additional nappies to use at home. Contact us for an up-to-date price.
